Top Tips For Passing Your Driving Test

Getting to driving age and receiving your all important provisional driving licence is such a big life event, and at this point you are so excited about getting behind the wheel and gaining even more independence, however it shouldn’t be rushed into. You need to make sure you have had enough driving lessons and that you really are ready to take your test. This will ensure you feel as confident as possible and that minor mistakes don’t cause you to fail.

So here are our tips to help you get your driving licence

1.    Preparation

Talk to your driving instructor about any areas where you feel unsure or worried and practice these more in the lead up to the driving test. Are there junctions in your area that you are unsure about? Ask to go via those junctions and ask about anything that is unclear - don’t keep it bottled up!

2.    Have a Lesson Before the Test

Having a driving lesson on the day of your test can help calm nerves, and give you the opportunity to ask any last-minute questions or have a final practice at the manoeuvres you find more tricky.

3.    Be on Time

It’s pretty obvious, but it will set you off on the right foot. We recommend arriving at the test centre around 10-20 minutes before your test time, to allow enough time to prepare without having to wait around too long. Rushing to get there or arriving late can leave you feeling flustered and you might even miss your test slot altogether.

4.    Book the First Test of the Day

If you think you will be nervous taking the first test of the day leaves less time for the worry to build up - you just get up and go!

5.    Check You Have Everything You Need

Our car is always ready and up to test standard, so you just need to think about everything you need - glasses if you need them, your provisional licence and your theory test certificate.

6.    Take Your Driving Instructor With You

You don’t have to do this, it is entirely your choice and go with whatever feels best for you. We just want you to know there is the option for your driving instructor to be in the car with you for the duration of the test, if you feel this will make you more confident. We will also provide another pair of eyes for any feedback you might need afterwards.

7.    Don’t tell your Friends

By telling all your friends, you’ll be increasing the pressure on yourself, instead when you pass your driving test, it can be a nice surprise for everyone!

8.    Practice Makes Perfect

Practice all the manoeuvres and driving routines you could be tested on in your driving exam as much as possible before your test. This definitely helps you feel more confident and become a better driver.

9.    Get to Know Your Test Routes

You will never know exactly where you might be headed or what hazards you might meet along the way, however once you have chosen your test centre we can help you get to know the area. We have an extensive knowledge of the test routes in Widnes, Warrington and Cheshire and will use them during our lessons to help familiarise yourself with the area.

10.  Listen to your Instructor

If your driving instructor say you are not ready to take your driving test, please listen. It is not in our interest to encourage you to take your test early, if you are not ready and fail, it reduces our pass rate, wastes both of our time and knocks your confidence. After hours of driving lessons, we will have a good understanding of when you are ready for the challenge of passing your test.

At the end of the day, even the most confident of new drivers can experience driving test nerves - this is completely natural, however you want to make sure they don’t interfere with your performance. So how do you try and keep those nerves under control? Preparation and trying to remove as much pressure as possible is key. Believe in yourself and remember that your driving instructor wouldn’t have recommended you apply for your test if they didn’t think you were good enough. Good Luck!
